Auckland City Centre Gateways – Crash Reduction
Posted speeds were lowered to 30-40km/h in the Auckland City Centre in 2020. Accordingly, gateway speed thresholds designed by TES were installed around the city centre. In 2025, reported Death and Serious Injury (DSI) crashes were analysed in the city centre, approximately 4.5 years ‘before’ and ‘after’ the gateways were installed. Reported crashes during the respective time periods indicate a 30% DSI reduction in the city centre, whereas only 9% Auckland-wide. During the respective time periods, DSI crashes in the city centre reduced by a rate 3x greater than the Auckland region, with 26 fewer DSI crashes occurring in the city centre during the latter time period.
Many roading and streetscape improvements have been implemented in the city centre during the analysis time period, and traffic volumes in the city centre have reduced. Nevertheless, the crash monitoring results indicate that reducing speeds to 30-40km/h in the city centre probably contributed to reducing road trauma.
